Prenatal Classes

Very useful for future mothers at first pregnancy, prenatal classes are not, as would seem at a first glance, an unnecessary repetition of information already obtained from the doctor who supervises the pregnancy, in magazines or specialty books. None of these alternatives cannot take the place of this information offered in at prenatal classes, simply because they offer a different vision of pregnancy, helping you to get used to future experiences that must go: internment, labor, birth, and early days with the baby etc.

When can you enroll?

Usually, it is advisable to follow the lessons in the last prenatal trimester. Why? Because this moment you will fully elucidate on what you want to know and especially because at "graduation", you will be ready to give birth with all the information fresh in your mind. Remember though that there are fewer offers of such courses, enrollment should be made in advance, sometimes even several months before the actual onset of the lesson time.

Where?

There are state hospitals who organize prenatal classes, and non-profit organizations focused on the rearing of children. Lessons may take 4-6 weeks, are held once a week (1-2 hours) and are scheduled either on weekends or starting at 18p.m., in order that the pregnant women can reach the classes even if they work. Also, at the lessons may assist the partners.

How much?

According to organizers, the courses may be free or may incur a certain amount per each lesson, but not exorbitant costs.

What is taught?

Courses are taught by qualified midwives or specialists in various fields (depending on the topics addressed in each lesson): obstetricians, anesthesiologists, legal advisors etc. Lessons are structured so that they cover all areas of interest for future mothers and are covered in chronological order: from tips to achieve the luggage for hospital to recommendations in what concerns nursing. Here are some approached issues:

  • The evolution of pregnancy and childbirth preparation.
  • Natural and cesarean birth.
  • What types of anesthesia exist?
  • How does hospitalization (shall I need enema, episiotomy)?
  • Confinement.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Child's bath.
  • The rights and facilities of mother and child (maternity leave, maternity grant, paternity leave, trousseau money, etc.).

How are the lessons developing?

Along with the explanations offered by experts that are detailed and well documented, pregnant women or partners can address specific questions. In presenting the stages of pregnancy and birth, video media and even specific "teaching material" are used (for swaddling, bath time, etc.). Also, pregnant women can communicate and exchange impressions about the different stages of pregnancy with other "colleagues" present in the course.
