Cesarean Pro`s And Con`s

Most doctors recommend cesarean delivery only in case of a problem that may endanger mother or fetus health, or when objective reasons prevent natural birth. But mom can express preference for this method of delivery. There are also obstetricians that are not fundamental and principled against this operation. But to decide formally, you need to know the causes that may lead to a cesarean and who are its effects.

When is it recommended?

In general, cesarean section is indicated when, for various reasons, natural birth should be avoided:

  • pelvic fetal presentation;
  • genital infection (i.e. herpes);
  • umbilical cord blood;
  • under/overweighed fetus;
  • lack of dilation;
  • fetal distress;
  • multiple birth;
  • mother's various diseases ;
  • maternal obesity;
  • fibroid or ovarian cyst presence, etc.

Advantages

If you want to give birth by caesarean section, even without having any of the above problems, it is sure that what made you target for this method of delivery is lack of labor pain.

Besides this important pro cesarean argument, this method shows some significant advantages:

  • anesthesia makes quick effect (whether epidural or spinal) and surgery result's without pain ;
  • operation lasts more than an hour;
  • accurately determined birth date;
  • removed contingencies ;
  • episiotomy will not be made;
  • labor's difficulties are avoided;
  • relatively quick recovery.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages related to the choice of cesarean sections are the same as in any surgery (risk of scar infection, bleeding, contracting a hospital acquired infection), plus some specific troubles:

  • Even if immediately after birth you will be shown your baby, you will be separated 12-16 hours (or even more, depending on recovery evolution), during which it will be in the neonatologist section and will be attended by medical staff.
  • You spend one and maybe even more nights in intensive therapy, under painkillers treatment for pain attention.
  • After moving to the salon, you will have a special diet (the first day tea, soup and toast, and yogurt and cottage cheese), the system continuing after discharge.
  • At 7 days after surgery, you will return to hospital for stitches to be removed.
  • Breastfeeding may occur later and the baby needs a mixed feeding (artificial milk that supplements breast milk).
  • You will be doing local treatment with antiseptics for scar healing.
